Surgery for Ellie Tomorrow

awww I just saw your post, Sorry to hear about Ellie and your husband. Hope Ellies surgery went well. And of course we remember you!!!! I love the Ellie stories!!!!!! And once shes better we'll need a photo update too!! Afterall she was the curly little sheltie!

OMG Lahree. When it rains it pours. I'll never forget little Ellie's spay. I pray this surgery is much easier and that her recovery is quick.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. What a lot to go through, for all of you.

Awaiting good news from Ellie's surgery!! :)

Well, the vet says that everything went well and the surgery was a success. However, since she has gotten home all she does is whine and groan and moan. She is restless. She can't get comfortable. About a half and hour ago she just lifted her tail and squated and proceeded to have a TON of diarrhea all over my once white carpet.

We let her out to go to the bathroom and did not know that the neighbor had returned home, which meant stupid neighbor dog was in the backyard and you guessed it, even in pain, Ellie ran to the fence and threw herself against it! She only did it once, however, so I am guesssing it really hurt. She was easy to stop. I slipped a leash on her and she will not go out again without a leash.

I got confused on the meds. She has three--Clavamox 250 for infection, Tramadol 50 mg for pain and then Vetprofen75 mg for inflamation and pain. I know the vet told me that she could have the Tramadol tonight and then start the rest tomorrow--I think. Now I am going to have to call him tomorrow and ask him because it seems to be like he said something like to finish all the Clavamox first and then start giving the Vetprofen? Why didn't I write it down?!

Her crying just rips me apart! I also don't know if we need to clean the stitches from the diarrhea? It looks like it missed them, but her skin is really irritated and swollen around the sutures, so it's hard to tell.

Gad, this is miserable.

I am SOOO glad Ellie pulled through okay. And it's great to hear she's back home. Deska had diarrhea after his surgery, then he got constipated for the next couple of weeks, someone told me it's the anasthetic that does it. I just lay plenty of rugs over the carpet. Once she starts on all the drugs she's going to feel like super dog so keep an eye on her. I ended up having to take Mr D outside on a leash while he was drugged up so he wouldn't over do it - because he did exactly the same thing and run the back fence when a dog went past. It was only after he came off the pain killers he realised he wasn't super dog.

Here's to a future with no more UTIs for Ellie.:fl

I'm so happy that Ellie made it through the surgery! It must be horrible seeing her in that kind of pain. Sure hope the pain medicine kicks in soon. I'll still be praying for you and your husband and Ellie. Things have to get better soon. (hugs)

Long post.......

Ellie had more terrible bouts of diarrhea last night but at least she was able to make it outside to get rid of it! There is always a silver lining I guess!

She walks horribly stiff-legged in her back legs, but I am sure that is to be expected given that she has so MANY stitches. Her stitches actually look pretty good! The vet is a neat and tidy stitcher! He must have sat in the front row during "Stitches 101!" LOL.

She still moans and groans and flips around trying to get comfortable. She had her pain pill about a half an hour or so ago and she is sleeping now, resting her head on her inflatable donut collar. That thing is a life-saver. So much better than a cone.

Whenever she wakes up, she acts like she doesn't have a clue where she is. It takes a few minutes for her to act like she actually recognizes things and even people. That's always freaky! Last night she was sleeping at Richard's feet and then woke up for whatever reason and jumped up suddenly when she saw Richard and then stared at him like she had never seen him before. Richard spoke to her softly and then reached out to pet her and she jumped backwards to avoid him and then ran away! Whoa. I spoke to her and she ran to me and clung to me, peeking around my legs at Richard. It took about a minute and a half of Richard speaking to her before she "got" that it was Daddy and then she was all appologetic body language and wags and hugs.

She drags her rear-end a lot and of course, no donut collar is going to stop that. She likes to do that the most on the cool, damp grass. The vet said there was nothing we could do about that, so just to stop her every opportunity we get.

The funniest thing I noticed last night is that on each side of her "pants" there is a little tiny, tiny clip that is holding her hair back out of the way of her "chute." I gave her a severe pant haircut before she went in to keep it out of the way, but the vet added the clips to make sure the hair wouldn't get in the way of the bathroom afterwards and was kind enough not to cut any more hair. I am going to leave them in until she is healed. They are really tiny but really do the job! She looks like she has two teeny, tiny pigtails.

Thanks again for all the kindness of this forum! We appreciate it more than I can say!

Lahree, I am so sorry you and Ellie are going through this. Poor little girl must be so uncomfortable. I pray she heals quickly and is much more comfortable in the future.

I know it breaks my heart when my pups are't well. Hang in there we are all thinking of you.

seeing this thread now- glad to hear that surgery was success.
You may or may not use Vetprofen and Tramadol- those are as needed meds for pain but Clavamox best if taken full cycle whatever your vet ordered.
Diarrhea could be from all those meds, including vetprofen and clavamox. Am thinking I would make sure I give meds with food and not on empty stomach. Make sure she is drinking plenty. My chiro vet recommends for competition times give water with mixture of honey and yogurt, just a bit to entice dog to drink plenty. Not sure if apply in your case but thought would mention.
If diarrhea lasts 3 days I would check with your vet-possible side effect of meds? Need to change?
Be strong there, recovery is always tough place to be. Hugs to Ellie!
