Trying to choose a breed, help please

- remember to write the questions down, gradually - once you see Shilah, then you definitely forgets all about your questions.:lol:

- personally I would change the food over 4-6 days, especially since there's so much going for her at the same time !!

These are two GREAT tips.

Waiting sucks. I know.

Well I have some disappointing news, the rescue just emailed me saying she has started having issues with other dogs on walks and no longer feel comfortable placing her with us especially with little ones. While I'm disappointed I do understand and feel it's for the best as well, I would rather be safe than sorry. They said they would let me know if anything changes or if they come across another dog that is child friendly. It's a bummer but I guess it's just not the right time in our lives, I hope for the best for Shilah and that she finds a good home.

Understand the disappointment, but as you write -rather be safe than sorry - it's probably a meaning to it all.

There is certainly a lovely Sheltie who will come to your family at the right time. :fl

We all hope the best for Shilah and that she finds a good home.

I'm sorry to read this latest update. I am glad the rescue was honest enough to recognize an issue and not want to put Shilah or your family in a potentially bad situation. I strongly believe things happen for a reason and the delays in your fence allowed for the rescue to have more time with Shilah and uncover a potential problem.

The good news is, your fence will be complete and the rescue still wants to place the right dog with you. Be patient and your little Sheltie will come home.

Yes, it is disappointing. I am impressed with your understanding that the right dog to fit your family is paramount.

When I first decided to rescue a sheltie I found one on Petfinder.com that I wanted desperately. The rescue asked me to please keep an open mind as they had 3 shelties that needed homes. I told them my heart was set on the one I saw but I would take the time to meet all three.

When I arrived at the home of the rescue the first dog they allowed me to meet was Billy. He was so terrified he never came out from under the kitchen table at the rescue. His first master was put into a nursing home and eventually passed away. A young man adopted him next but was a maniac depressive and committed suicide.

The second sheltie just did not seem interested in me or my Laddie. The third sheltie (the one I originally wanted) was very high energy. As Laddie was already very high energy I thought the two together might be too much.

I ended up with the scared and frightened little Billy. He had gone though so much in his short life that I could not help but adopt him. He added so much to my life. He rescued me and my family. I am attaching the pictures of dear little Billy (he is on the left in both pictures). The first, is at the rescue when I got him. The second, shows how he bonded to Laddie at my home. I miss him so. He was my first rescue and is still in my soul.

YOU WILL find the right sheltie. My heart was set on one... yet, I left with another. This is your fate as well... Hoping your match is found soon. :biggrin2::hugs

So sorry for your disappointing news...but kudos to the rescue for being responsible and not just letting you take the doggie and then run into trouble.

On the bright side, you now are 100% ready when the right dog comes along with your yard safely fenced in...many rescues won't adopt without a fenced yard. As everyone else has said...the right little dog is just waiting for you to find him/her...it WILL happen.

Thank you all for the encouraging words, I know that I will know when the time is right and we have found the one. Waiting longer is probably for the best, I will reassess whether we are still ready or not when the time comes. It will be good not to have to worry about the fence and it's good to have even just for the children. I can put most of the stuff away for use later but I'm not sure what to do with the dog food, it's not open but I don't want it to go to waste.

Ghggp beautiful photos of Laddie and Billy

Amanda, any of your local shelters would welcome the donation of the dog food if it hasn't been opened. Any donations help as most shelters are run on very tight budgets.

I was going to suggest the same thing.

You may be able to return the unopened bag to the store you purchased it from but they would most likely throw it away, which (IMO) is a waste.

Oh that's a great idea, I hadn't thought of that, thank you that's what I will do.:smile2: I certainly don't want it to go to waste.
