Trying to decide whether to euthanize our wonderful puppy

Thank you, thank you, thank you all. This is just a tiny update because I have to get to an appointment; I will write more later. The surgeon says he feels he can do a surgery that will give Fainly a normal life. We are going to try for that. I will write more later today. Deep thanks to you all for your wonderful support. We feel we have made the right decision. We still have to see the GI vet to see how that fits in to Fainly's future, so there could be something there that would change the picture, but we'll do that next Monday and hope it will be okay.
OMG I am SO happy for you!!!!!!! I have been checking every few hours hoping for a positive update and I am sure the GI issue can be solved. Happy tears here for Fainly, you and your husband!

Fainlysmom, you have made my day...that is just the best possible news! I know any surgery is daunting, but I can tell you as someone whose puppy had two orthopedic sugeries in 12 months before she was two years old, it's worth it. Fainly is young enough to heal faster and better, and if the vet thinks it can give him a normal life, that's fantastic. I am so very happy for all of you!! Thank you so much for the update!

Praying for you and your sweet puppy. I cannot imagine the pain you are going through. These sweet, intelligent animals invade our hearts and minds. Their unconditional love is what we all crave and the absence of them in our lives is unbearable. You are the only one who can decide what is best for them. I know you will do the right thing.

I have been out of town and offline, but thought of you and Fainly constantly, read the post with much trepidation. I AM SO GLAD to see he can be helped and that you have the means to do that. Honestly it's the best news I've had in a while. Bless you for giving him this chance; he sounds like such a very special boy who will brighten your days for years to come. We are ALL here pulling for you both. Let us know what the GI doc says - ask about Trini's special diet that she posted about. Continued thoughts and best wishes coming from So Cal. :fl :hugs

PS Honestly, we need a happy dance emoji!!!

Hello, everyone -- I thought I'd try to write a bit of a fuller explanation of what Fainly's immediate future is. You all have been so kind and caring about him. If he could know I'm sure he would appreciate it. That sounds a bit silly I guess, but I chose him from a picture when he was a new puppy because he had such a sweet, intelligent, understanding expression I fell in love with him right away, and he has not disappointed us. He is truly a wonderful companion.

He sees the internists on Thursday; these are vets new to us who are affiliated with a large multi-specialty area with many vets having separate offices there, including our orthopedist. He will be evaluated by them and we will be given their evaluation of his situation. If they okay our current plan we will go back to the orthopedist for a CT scan so that he can get a better view of Fainly's hock joints and leg bones, and if nothing else appears to stop us we will proceed to surgery, probably on the 27th of this month.

I read about FMT; good heavens! Sounds awful, but who am I to say? I'm certainly an advocate of the "whatever works" category at this time!

I looked up Trini's special diet, Hill's Prescription z/d. Thanks. Yes, we've had Fainly on Hill's Prescription Diet i/d for several weeks now. He likes it, and it may have modified his loose bowels some; still not fixed entirely, though.

I look forward to the day when I can give Fainly and his physical and psychological health a totally positive review. Maybe I'll even have time sometime to read about other puppies who we can contribute some good thoughts to. I hope so! I'll keep you posted about his course as it occurs, and our thanks to all of you.

I am so glad you have some positive options.
I would love to offer assistance with surgery recovery and puppysitting if I am close enough (bay area,CA).
I have lots of experience with that LOL....

One thing, I know we hate drugging our pups but when they are healing from surgery it can be best for them to sleep all the time so they don't get into trouble and hurt themselves further. especially when they are rambunctious little guys.
