Tully - lots of tests and now a diagnosis

I can't believe Delta won't accept titers--and that there's an age limit. How upsetting. Are there other organizations in your area that she could register with instead?

It's the Aust Vet Assoc (AVA) that is against titers, so the Delta (Aust) vets won't support it either, even though WSAVA guidelines do say less vaccs. It's very frustrating. Supposedly it's because the pharma companies will only support annual vaccs (no surprise) so AVA reckon it's too risky to vaccs 'off label'. It's quite appalling really.

The new med is really knocking Tully around. A couple of hours after she takes it she's heavily asleep and panting, she startles when I touch her. And Tully's become obsessed with food, like Deska she's climbing bins, licking the ground, searching the floors, disappearing to find food. I may need to muzzle her on walks. It makes me sad because it reminds me how sick Mr D must have been for so long, and I feel so guilty because I should have pushed the vets harder.

I've been giving her kangaroo patties and tuna patties sometimes and it certainly makes her poops less smelly. If she's going to be farty at least it will stink less, but I need to check with a nutritionist that it's balanced. The IMS said he'd refer to a nutritionist in the US. I see him again next week.

It is just so heartbreaking to know all you have endured over the last year and now this year. As others have said, I just wish you could catch a positive break for a while.
Sending you and Tully prayers of comfort. Virtual hugs too! :hugs

Probably even less cuddles, hoping it's just the warmer weather. She's asleep in the middle of the floor most of the time- despite having 2 dog beds - so I have to step over her all the time. Neither Tully nor the cats will get on the couch since Mr D died, so I sit on the couch alone. Had to carry her home this morning on our walk, she really is losing energy. And she's got so little fur, hoping she'll get undercoat for winter.

What a roller coaster ride of emotions and health issues you have been on! My goodness you seem to be holding your own! You are one strong woman!

Sure hope Tully rallies a bit for you. Knowing she gets tired now, did you have a stroller for her? I am sure having to carry her for any long distance can be a physical strain on you! Please take care of yourself!

I am so sorry Tully is having issues with her meds. It is SO hard because they can't talk and say 'hey, this hurts here' or 'mom, this makes me feel....". The issues with the Pred may taper off a bit after she is on it a while.

Different animal, but I have a 12 yr old Siamese who has pancreatitis along with a load of other issues. He has been on Pred for a year. It has been a wonder drug for him as it stopped his vomiting and wasting away almost immediately, but the side effects have been tough and it can aggravate his pancreatitis while at the same time calming and soothing it. He gained a tremendous amount of weight, he walks around the house howling at times - middle of the night is a favorite. I am constantly playing with the pred to see how much I have to give him without him having problems with his issues.. Pets (cats at least) do not react to Pred like humans, so there is no worry of having to taper off, etc. He was on a daily dose, I got it down to 3-4 days a week, then had to pop it up, his last pancreatitis attack I gave it to him twice daily. While he can't talk to me, I can closely watch his symptoms and behavior.

Do you have any holistic vets near you? And is Tully on anything like a milk thistle supplement? Milk Thistle is all natural, won't interfere with her medications but helps the liver. Good for humans on meds but can be used safely with our pets as well.

I don't understand why titers are not accepted, quite aggravating. Our first doxie was massively reactive to Distemper. He required benedryl, an IV drip and they'd keep him under observation on a drip for 24 hours. I finally talked that vet into dosing him every other year, but the year he didn't have the distemper shot, we couldn't take him anywhere at all. At that time, titers were not excepted where I live either. I admit, those last few years of Buddy's life, I said to hell with the vaccines, he was old, never went anywhere, wasn't exposed to anything - he got a 3 year rabies vaccine to abide by law and to keep him licensed and that was it. We put him down, here at the house (my new vet comes to me!), he was wasting away, sick, deaf, had cataracts, but he lived a good happy life and thank heavens I did not have to give him another vaccine; he passed with our help before I would have been forced to and I honestly don't think his body could have handled even one at that time. With Brodie, my new vet says the distemper he will receive is now a three year once he gets his adult shot and now titers ARE accepted here.

I am not sure how I missed this thread Caro...but I am just seeing this now. I am so sorry to hear about Tully. Enough is enough for you already. I really don't have anything I could add, except that I hope the energy comes back and the inflammation doesn't turn into something more.

We don't have holistic vets, but I will ask the IMS about milk thistle. Got to be very careful about limiting her diet to give her intestines a rest so always have to check.

I have to work out how far to let her walk. The pred makes her joints better so she wants long walks, but then can't do it. My back has gotten so bad I have to keep moving and she needs to stop to rest. We're not the greatest pair.

Pet stroller has definitely been a lifesaver for us with Brooke - but you still have to lift her in and out. We let her walk until she's tired and then pop her into the stroller. I'm beyond sorry for all your troubles, Caro.:hugs
