What kind of coat is this?

Watch the area of the tail were it naturally bends. You will start to see a patch of shinier hair develop. That will be the beginning of the adult coat.

Your just going to have to wait and see what it comes out to be. Was the dame and sir rough coated or soft? This is one of those questions you should go to your breeder with.
 
I have two dogs.

Bacca takes FOREVER to wet down for bathing....because he has a proper guard coat which repels waters. THIS IS NORMAL AND WHAT THEIR COAT IS SUPPOSED TO DO!!!!

Indy, even though the same age (6 years) still has more puppy like fur as guard hair, but he has the biggest pair of undercoat pants ever!

If you have a coarse coat...rejoice, because that is proper for the breed. It will grow long and flow down to protect them.

btw....I hate the word "coarse" because implies not soft. Petting a Sheltie is always soft. But I don't know what better word to describe a proper Sheltie coat. Except to say, when you pet your dog, you should feel the fur beneath your hand, not as soft blanket, but as a linen towel. Still soft and flexible but sturdy.

Does this make any sense to anyone?

Well I can't recall the breed standard saying anything about a coarse coat, I remember it saying "rough coated" (like a Rough Collie vs. Smooth Collie). I agree with you, I don't like hearing the word "coarse" describing our sweet n' soft babies either.:wink2:

This is how I feel. Puppy coats versus adults are so much different. Ruutu now has a "coarse" coat, but I feel like this is my first sheltie in a long time that I've had a coarse coated sheltie. Honey is all poof, feels as soft as a blanket. Boy is coarse a lot different to bathe. I'm glad it's the correct way, but geesh it's a pain to brush.

Dani has it right on. Lil' Lady's coat is coarse now. When she was a pup I never figured on wetting down her coat as long as I have to for a shampoo,
or rinsing. Thank goodness she loves her shampoo.

Yes like Shelby's mom stated about her sheltie, Lil' Lady is the same she doesn't feel the rain.

Lady's coat from a pup to an adult, lets say it exploded in thickness, coarseness, and color. She is like her sire in hair but different in color.

Lucky is a fluffy guy, and you can see his line in him. He is alot easier to
wet down from little on.
 
So I think her coat is going to turn out like her moms (which is incorrect :() But I am not sure.. If it repels water would it be correct or just a puppy coat?
