Ally is ill

Some improvements!

Well, I am happy to post a little progress note that's actually progress! Ally feels much like her old self today - spunky, more stamina, bright eyed, ran some on our weekly long Sunday morning walk. Eating is still hit or miss, but we are able to coax her into eating some out of her dish and some off our fingers, enough to keep her going anyway.

She is still getting just 100ml of SQ fluids daily, although I'm not sure she needs it. Her next vet appt is a week from tomorrow to recheck labs etc. The specialist vet had given us a few samples of food to try, and strangely, she decided today she likes the kibble of K/D (kidney diet). Unfortunately it's higher in fat than she's supposed to have. Balancing out a kidney/pancreatitis diet is a huge problem, for now we are sticking with low fat because her nausea seems to be pancreas related.

Best news? Sunday AM means scrambled eggs for the girls, and Ally absolutely loves them normally, but has turned away from them for weeks. This morning, she couldn't hardly wait for the plate to hit the ground before she dove into it!! :eek2: Wow, hubby and I were ELATED!! We are wondering if she associates the dog food taste with feeling sick, "the ick factor", as my vet said.

Anyway, fingers crossed she is slowly on the mend....:fl

Outstanding news! I can see why you and your hubby are so elated!

I completely understand the ick factor!!! When I was ill as a child I was given tea to drink... To this day, I can nor drink or even stand the smell of tea! Never thought about the fact that it could happen to dogs too!

Happy dance!!! So grateful for the positive news... We are all celebrating with you!!! Go little Ally!

Gosh, I would sure love to see a video of her!

Virtual hugs and pats!

Sharon, that is a very encouraging update! Three cheers for scrambled eggs! Lots of prayers that this improvement continues for your sweet Ally. :smile2:

I haven't been around for a while, so I am just catching up with Ally being poorly. I am so glad to hear you have had a positive update and I hope she continues to improve. It is such a struggle when our pups are so restricted with food. :hugs

So happy to hear your good news!

Tell, little Ally we are fans of scrambled eggs at this end, too.

Will keep you folks and Ally in my prayers. Please hug Ally for me, thanks.

Quick update on Ally. It is one step forward, one step back in general. After many, many variations on dog food, which didn't seem to make a difference in her eating or not, we decided to stick with the Royal Canin low fat canned food. She seems to like it the most and the consistency is such that we can force feed her (sorry there's no easier term) if we need to. We just open her mouth and put it in her cheek pocket and wait for her to swallow. This takes a fair amount of time as she needs to eat a 1/2 can at a time to get her total calories.

She will sometimes eat it off our fingers or palms, but not out of the bowl or a plate. There is just no rhythm or reason to all this which makes me nuts.

Of course we give her a chance at first to eat on her own, but instead of offering all different kinds of thing if she refuses her dog food, we are feeding her. Work mornings are hardest since we have a time limit, of course. :(

This morning she was fed, then a bit later we had the scrambled eggs. She hopped up and down waiting for her bowl; dove into it and ate about half and then walked away. Last week, she ate it all. SIGH.

I am calling my vet Monday to see about scheduling the next round of lab work. The absolute crazy thing is, she is acting totally like her normal spunky self. She is trotting our 2 mile walk daily, interspersed with some running after the stick (or Faith which ever is closer :smile2:), interacting with us, barking at vacuum or if she wants in.... etc. It just doesn't make sense. My now retired vet said "Treat the dog not the numbers", but the food issue is just so puzzling and discouraging. One thing we will try tonight is sprinkling a small amount of Parmesan cheese on top of her food, my hubby's idea.

I want to know what her kidneys are doing, since this type of food is not the best for that. We are also looking at taking a long weekend at Yosemite with the girls to play in the snow next month. Ally loves snow and realistically it is likely the last time for her. That is, if there IS snow... weather here has been so freaky. So, that's where we stand.

Sharon, it is so good that Ally seems her normal happy self...but the eating issue sure is a puzzle. I assume her mouth/teeth have been checked (x-ray) to make sure there is no bone or root infection that is not visible to the naked eye?

Sending gentle hugs to your special gal.

Trini

I wish I could offer some advice :( I am glad Ally is still happy....

All I can say, is yes there is snow at Yosemite. Gavin loves the snow, too. We might have to make a trip up to the Tahoe area once he gets the all clear from the vet on his healed leg.
