Best time to go emergency vet?

This morning he was moving well, and he ate breakfast from his food bowl again. Will have to see how he looks when he poops. I am just so nervous about over doing it or even letting him do too much, since he was moving this well 10 days ago (before he had a nice long stroller walk that he loved but after that he could barely walk on his own without falling down). If he can poop on his own OK for a couple of times, I'll let him try and walk to the potty area 40 feet from my front door.

I can understand your apprehension Cindy. We’re all guilty of giving the dog too much freedom when they’re first feeling better after an injury or Illness. It’s especially hard for you with Gavin because he’s already limited with his movement. Just go slow, your doing everything right.

watching him struggle is hard. I have to stop myself from helping him and let him figure it out. He does end up plopped down in odd places, and I know it's because his leg(s) gave out at an inopportune time. But unless it's him falling in his own pee or poop, I'm trying to stay out of it.

hand feeding him is definitely a bonding experience.

You are at such a hard stage of caregiving as you noted, Cindy. You want to leap in there and do it all for them, but really if they are able to figure it out or cope on their own, it's good to leave them some independence and dignity. Just my humble opinion.

yeah.. I am worried about him getting depressed (hell, I get depressed if I think about this stuff too much or have to explain to anyone what is going on and why their suggestions aren't appropriate for my disabled dog who I have been nursing through his mobility issues for 4 years). So I can't baby him too much, or give him snuggles all day long. Really, my goal right now is for him to be able to pee and poop on his own without any issues. Right now, I kinda steady the outside of his hips to steady him while he's pooping if I see him struggling.

Sharon - Humble advice, no in my opinion it is a good advice.

We all want to do everything for our beloved dogs,
but I think that working breeds need us to allow them
to think and do (small) job themselves
