Brooke update

Sharon, I'm so glad Brooke is rallying! Just as an point of interest, our Bitsy Boodle was diagnosed with a lymphoma on her liver. That was two years ago. She also has debilitating arthritis. Every day, she gets thinner, it seems, but still she's happy and eager for a visit to her stream, a game of ball, and treats, of course. Our vet just shakes his head and smiles. We've simply put any negative thoughts about her condition away. Life will unfold, as life does. You're giving Brooke good care and doing everything to give her happiness and comfort. I hope you can enjoy every single minute. :hugs

Glad she is so perky! Brooke really only knows that she was feeling bad, and now she feels better!

Gavin has been climbing the ramp to get into bed with me at night (I changed the leveling a bit and it seems to have made a huge difference for Gavin).
Even though it wakes me up every time, I am just so happy he can make it up there (and still wants to!).
His overall quality of life is pretty darn high, even if he can't do a lot of what he used to.

Brooke completed a Nosework practice just now, and hasn't lost a step. My husband and I keep looking at each other and saying, "Are we SURE she's sick???!!" Unfortunately we know she is but you can't tell. I can't pass her by these days without bending down and caressing her, sometimes I do start crying because I don't want to lose her.

You are doing exactly what your heart tells you Sharon! Appreciating every minute with Brooke! She appreciates the extra special attention!

When Logan was sick my vet said he loves Shelties and hates them at the same time! I was so perplexed by his comment when he explained himself. He said he loves them for their kind nature but hates them for their stoic nature. They don’t show their discomfort or pain so it is sometimes difficult to diagnose their true discomfort!

Sharon, you are filling Brooke's days with love and right now that is all that matters. I don't know which is easier...losing a dog suddenly without any warning or knowing that a dog you love has limited time...both are heartbreaking.

We have lost 4 precious dogs in the last 11 months...Timmy Timbit, Pixie, Tessa and Mickey. Timmy died suddenly with zero warning. Pixie, Tessa and Mickey died after fighting different types of cancer. In the end, the overwhelming grief and emptiness is the same. Although with the ones you know are ill, even though you try to put that knowledge aside and make life normal, you grieve hundreds of times before the end actually comes.

May your precious Brooke have a lot more happy time with you...and may you find ways to put aside the future and just cherish every moment of the present.

Hugs to you and Brooke, Trini

My sincere sympathies to you Trini; I can't imagine losing 4 dogs in that short of a time span. I well remember you having a crew of adorable Poms in addition to your Shelties - I think Mickey was one. I really appreciate your words of wisdom and insight as one who truly gets it. I am so grateful for SN members helping keep me afloat during this time.

And you are right, we are grieving a bit every day while trying to maintain a normal life for her.

Trini, I also was so shocked to read of your great loss! I thought mine was bad losing 1 dog each year for three years in a row and then my sister’s little Jasmine too!

I just could not fathom losing 4 in 11 months! So tragic! My heart goes out to you! No matter what we could never imagine our lives without these sweet souls!

Virtual Hugs to you!

Sharon and Gloria, thank-you both for your words of sympathy. Yes, Sharon, Mickey was my one of little Pommie boys...he loved and lived life to the fullest...he simply radiated joy.

No matter when or how we lose these beloved little souls it is devastating...each one takes a piece of us with them when they go. And, as much as we love them all, some claim and take a bigger piece of our hearts. Life is never the same after a loss...it takes time to construct a new normal. Some days are better than others...but in the darkest times I remind myself that, in spite of the pain, I wouldn't have wanted to miss even one moment of loving them.

Sharon, Brooke is so happy right now and has no idea that her time may be limited...that is such a blessing...cherish that happiness with her.

Many hugs to you both...Trini

Oh Trini, what you said is beautiful. I am so sorry you've been through so much heartache.

Some days I can barely breathe for the grief of losing Deska. It's impossible to explain how much pain the loss can be. I know everything that happened in my life was just the lead up to meeting Mr D and there is nothing you could offer that would make me trade in that time. But with absolute love also comes absolute grief.

Sharon, even though I only got 10days extra with Deska and he was so very sick, I am really glad I had that time. Treasure every moment, you will never regret the time, bittersweet as it it.
