Time to do a bucket list. And the nice thing is he can see Santa at the pet shop if he's up to it. We'll be hitting cafes, pet shops, Bunnings (hardware) and visits from the many human friends he accumulated (he was a very social dog). But top of the list is cuddles with mum.

NEWS FLASH: Picking him up at 8.30 in the morning. Not allowed to visit tonight as there's big storms and the hosp is expecting to be busy. He is such a tough bloody dog. I know we say Shelties are 'soft' but they are actually really courageous.

You should have seen the smile when we pulled up at home, wish I'd gotten the camera.

He's home, very unsettled but is moving around this afternoon and ate some lunch. I think he's doing ok. They didn't give pain relief to take home. Their view is I can just come back in if I need it. But it's an hour round trip and I don't want to take Deska back so not really happy. I think the pacing (and drinking) is pain related. Not sure why they were so resistent to pain relief, he's had major surgery and is in palliative care.

Just cooking fish to see if he'll eat that, need to keep his protein up. I had to go out for a couple of hours - that was hard. Tully did not want to stay home with him. She's not interacting with him and is trying to eat his food. I guess she's learning to do without him already.
 
Oh Caro I'm so happy he's finally home! Perhaps Tully's nose is out of joint with him being gone so long... I'm sure he must've been very happy to be home!
Terrible that they wouldn't give you anything for pain! He certainly doesn't need a stressful car ride and then to see that clinic (which I'm sure he hates) again.
 
Btw - interesting bit of info, Tramadol doesn't work in dogs. They discovered recently that dogs, unlike humans and cats, don't have M1 opioid receptors to get the pain relief and all it may do is affect serotonin and norepinephrine. So now I feel vindicated - I kept telling vets when they prescribed Tramadol that it didn't work and it caused behaviour changes in Deska.
 
I am so relieved Deska is home with you although sad he has no pain meds on board!

I know you were seeing a specialist but do you have a regular vet you could go to to get pain meds?

Possibly CBD oil? Many reviews say it helps with pain for dogs and people.

Just glad he is home! Tell little Tully she needs to help! Appeal to her softer Sheltie side!

Keep up updated! Fingers and paws crossed he feels a bit better! Getting enough food in him might be the struggle now. Hopefully, now that he is home and more relaxed his appetite may increase? Hope springs eternal!!!

No wonder it's not giving Riley ANY relief! I told the vet it wasn't doing anything for him, just makes him a bit drowsy.
Thanks for the info Caro...I'm just waiting for some CBD oil to arrive, hope that helps.
 
So happy Deska is home with you!!! If he is in pain and does not have much time left, I would push for the meds. He might as well be comfortable. Unless they think it will make his condition worse? Maybe they can call a vet closer to you for the prescription, so you don't have to drive an hour?
