Dog Wheelchair

So we had a 30 minute walk this morning and Gavin did great.
Tonite I was going to take him out for 30 minutes. He was not having it! we made it across the street when he refused to move unless we came back home, where he walked really fast to my neighbors for a treat. Sigh.....

I do treat him on walks periodically. Before all this, he loved his walks..he walked me really, always out in front, would go on forever. Now, its a chore for him sometimes. It just makes me so sad.....

I know now with Brooke and her stroller, it is hard to see them have off days. She is still walking roughly a mile along the way. We start off in the stroller, get to the off leash area along the creek, and get her out. She goes along at her own pace, often still trotting. Then I pop her back in the stroller when we turn around for home. She could probably do the whole 2 mile walk but I worry she'll overdo it. Today she wasn't as fast, so I was immediately concerned. But at one point she did rally and ran a few steps barking at Faith, and seemed happy enough.

Hard not to wish for how it was in the past, but I try my best to just be thankful I have any version of Brooke at all, considering. I know you feel the same about Gavin.

It's hard on us when we start to notice our dogs getting older and having less energy! I'm really hoping the warmer weather gives Riley some relief...some days he moves good and then the next day he's having difficulty with the stairs (he's on 1 Gabapentin 2/day and 6 kg dose Metacam). Lately, although it's been cold the humidity has been quite high and I wonder if that's made his arthritis worse at times...so hard when they can't tell you when they're having an off day!

Gavin seemed fine this morning . I drove him to one of his favorite walks in a local park with trails. So it's either he prefers mornings or its motivation. So frustrating!
He does like to just watch people..anytime anyone walks by he wants to watch them....
Poor guy never used to be like this so I can only assume he has been feeling isolated :(
We did (like 7 years ago) like in apartment where the balcony overlooked the parking lot. He would sit out there for hours just watching people.
My backyard has 6 foot fence so nothing to watch...

My sister has one of those Furbo dog cameras, she gives them treats and talks to them through an app on her phone. I've always thought it was a waste of money but perhaps if he's lonely it's an option. Cheaper than a puppy lol.

So the brace is going back. It just made no difference. Gavin was still toe touching just as much, and his paw would slip out from under him even more. Limp was the same, too.

Walk this morning was abbreviated with the stroller, but Gavin really enjoyed meeting a lawn care guy and getting loves..He was eating it up!
When he wants to move, he can really move. When he doesn't, he doesn't. Poor guy, I just want him to be happy....

With all you do for him Cindy he is probably the happiest Sheltie around!
It was worth a try with the brace...at least now you know.

I just feel so guilty today... Like Gavin has been suffering the past 16 months with lack of people/dog contact.
I mean he was totally leaning into this guy this morning and was so happy to love on him....
Now he does the same with me, but he has never been a people dog but a dog who loves meeting other dogs.

And quite a few times he stopped to just watch...something in the woods.

Am I not understanding what he wants?
