Donation assistance for rescued CA shelties

I read that blog and was like, omg, really? At her age, her punishment should be limited to keeping one dog and having home checks. For any animal lover, that is punishment...or heck, no more animals. I'm not sure if it was that blog or another, who stated the woman did have help with upkeep. Imho, they are as much to blame. Unless you have a full staff of at least 5 people full round the clock, I cant see how a few people can upkeep that many Shelties and I'm not talking minimum care either.

Sigh. If anyone here is 90 something and has more than a few dogs, heck I'd talk to them out of anymore. Wouldn't any sane person? Or someone you'd call a friend?

At her age, I'm sure taking away all the dogs is punishment enough. I hope they don't press charges or even fine her. She's lost her home, her dogs, I think she's been punished enough. I'd love to question the people who said they helped the woman out. I'd simply ask, "wth were you thinkingnletting her keep 60 Shelties?!"

Ok, I finally have a tiny update! Judi had a call from the shelter this evening right before closing. She wasn't home at the time, so we only know that they are asking us to take in two "little old men", as well as us helping them with home checks for the ones that are nearly adopted. Of course Judi left a message saying that we would do both. From the looks of the website, there are 30 dogs spayed and neutered, and since they have interviewed a number of people, it seems like the home checks will be all that is standing in the way for these babies to finally go to their new homes and start their new lives. At least half of them! I am sure they will be calling Judi back tomorrow, so hopefully I will be able to tell you guys more! ~ Kathleen

Another update from the Sheltie Rescue:


Hi All! Well, we have "our" two little boys. They are at the vet and we are hoping for a discussion with the vet as to their conditions when the vet closes tonight or tomorrow morning. Kathy and Judi picked them up at the shelter today, and were a bit sad to see that after all the beautiful grooming, they were very dirty again from shelter life. Maybe I will get my hands on some of the Riverside dogs after all! They also are developing kennel cough, but...that is also expected. There is a blue merle (the younger one) and a bi-blue (a pretty darn old guy!), both beautiful boys with what should be lovely coats one day. Both are seniors, listed at nine and eleven but suspected to be older. Their teeth are very bad, but they are probably not in good enough health right now to have extractions, so I am sure that they will continue on antibiotics for the time being. Both are sweet, scared, but seem very gentle.

We are really not aware of the status of the shelties that are up for adoption now, but more than half have been removed from the website. We have heard from some of the applicants that have been approved to have home visits, and we will be doing home visits for some of the families. An interesting bit of information...apparently over half of the applicants for these shelties declined a home visit, and did not continue the adoption process when they learned that the home visits would be required. Others apparently declined to adopt because of their ongoing medical or social issues. Also, the shelter has indicated that there is a very good chance that these two will not be the only shelties we will be getting. They still want to adopt out as many as they can, and I don't know if there are any available as of now.

These guys are going to cost A LOT to bring back to health, and we are committed to giving them all the help they need. We feel that they if any dogs deserved to have their golden years truly golden, it is these guys! So, this is the plea I promised you nearly two weeks ago! LOL! Now that we know that we do need funds for these dear old guys, we are officially asking for donations (and again thanks so much to the generous sheltie folks that have already helped out for these boys!) Thanks to Southland Sheltie Rescue!

I just sent in another donation!

The fact that all these shelties did not go directly into sheltie rescue organizations disturbed me. I am thankful that home visits are mandatory and that sheltie rescues are asked to help in this regard.

However, my fears from before are being realized if the proper homes for these traumatizes shelties are not scrutinized to the highest degree! That is why sheltie rescues are the proper place for them. Only a breed rescue understands the needs of these poor souls. I am willing to donate to a sheltie rescue ONLY!

I am glad to see that Southland Sheltie Rescue is helping to do home visits! MANDATORY home visits will weed out anyone who is not a good match for these dogs. Since I have rescued 5 over my lifetime I understand the home visit process and the need to place the right dog in the right home. Knowing the current temperament of the amimals already residing in the home, understanding the physical and emotional needs of shelties is key to a successful match that only a breed rescue can perform.

Thanks to all that are on site to help! Grooming being the first step! I hope Southland Sheltie Rescue gets more than two dogs from Riverside. I will continue to donate to them in hopes they can help more. I have a sweet spot in my heart for seniors and always understand their ongoing medical support needs!

Bless you all for getting the initial word out and keeping us all updated on the progress... I wish we could set up a website showing all the individual dogs in their new loving homes. I pray for a great future for all of them!

The rescue posted pictures of these two sr. boys yesterday on their FB page. I couldn't get them to load here. They were a bit shocking. How anyone could say that these dogs were not neglected is beyond me seeing some of the photos.

I guess if this is what being treated like royalty is like - I'm thinking these shelties would rather have passed on the honour!

There has to be a penal code for flat out neglect-cruelty rather than violent and intentional harm-cruelty. I hope there is. It is a great shame what animals go through in this country at the hands of people.

We will be donating to Southland to help too. I hope these boys can find love and comfort in the time they have left.

I know what you're trying to say, but I see it as a very fine distinction indeed. Just suppose these were children we were discussing - we would be outraged, but these are just dogs.

Which part, the not grooming, lack of dental care, nails grown into footpads, feces hardened into coat like cement, tick infestation, filthy living conditions, lack of medical care for the sick ones, was non-intentional? In my eyes, being aware and choosing not to act to remedy the situation is no less cruel.

This is a breeder/judge we are discussing, someone we should be holding to the highest of standards. She should have known better, else she had no business breeding & showing dogs, yet she allowed this to happen under her watch. I don't care if she's 92 - age does not excuse this level of neglect of helpless creatures in our care.
