Oh no! I hope she's going to be all right! Pyo can make them so sick. So sad that she hadn't been spayed to avoid this....

Hi All! Well, we have some very good news about little Kiara! She did not have Pyo after all! The vet described her as having a normal "over used" uterus. She did have severe dental disease with pyorrhea, which is most certainly the cause of her high white blood cell count. They worked on her mouth at the same time she was spayed, and...oh boy...are you ready for this? They had to extract 26 teeth. She only has her 4 K-9's and 2 lower molars remaining. But the wonderful news is that she is fully up and awake and doing the "sheltie spin" according to our great vet staff! What a wonderful dog! She probably feels better than she has in a very, very long time already! And she is already eating tonight! I think that your prayers and good vibes did the trick with this little girl! I think it is wonderful we here are helping these babies with donations, that Dawn got Indy headed home, and that the pup in Florida is being pulled and cared for through our action.

Having 6 teeth can still work. My daughter has a senior malti-poo that had 12 teeth pulled not long ago. I'm not sure how many teeth she still has but not many. She was a rescue that was a hot mess when we got her. I can tell you she will still gobble up dry food & dog bones. It's so funny because she does this thing with her mouth like a little old lady gumming. It hasn't slowed her down at all.
Glad Kiara is doing better. With her spirit she will be one to watch.

I was just going to post this. I can't understand how these dogs had so many serious dental problems. Indy is only 5 and his teeth were terrible. He looked like he might have infection, because the sides of his mussel looked swollen and he had a little discharge from his nose. The shelter had him on Keflex to prevent kennel cough. I hope he can get to a vet soon. His back teeth were completely brown and his breath was crazy bad!

Just saw this on FB. Posted on Sheltie Owners page. Looks like they found this guy a great home with experienced sheltie people!!
I'm pleased to report our new boy came home with us today. The people at the Riverside (California) County Animal Shelter have been most helpful in this adoption process.
Since he is our fifth Sheltie, his "working" name is Quinto. So far he hasn't said a word, but he's a bit of a cuddler, a tail wager, and gives kisses. He seems a little disoriented, not surprising given all the "stuff" he's gone through in the last few weeks. He's completely comfortable in his crate, his place of security.
(The large dark area on his nose in the photo is a shadow, not actual coloring.)

Here is a quote from the comments section on the latest Southland Shelties rescue posting, by one of the ladies who volunteered to do grooming ( Anne DeWitt). Complete neglect of dental care would over many years have that result - this wasn't just a little tartar build up. infected teeth are not only painful but they can make a puppy really sick as well.
"As someone said....Thank God a spotlight (unfortunately in the form of a small fire) was shone on these dogs before any of their conditions worsened. The mouths alone on some of these dogs apparently are frightening. Just the ones I mouthed while grooming them were scary."

I wish I could have 5 shelties!!!
always wanted a tri... So glad to know he will be loved and cared for by sheltie people!!! He is home now and safe!!!
