First Puppy!!!

Having a girl is not that bad. I respect my girl in a way I don't with the boys. The boys are like perpetual babies. The girl is my bestie, my sista, my adult conversation, the one I truly count on as a best friend. She is a bit more moody, but she works her heart out for me if I ask it. I would have gotten a girl in a heartbeat if I did not already have one when I chose my puppy.

You can always spay on the early side and avoid heat all together if you don't want to go through it. It's not THAT horrifying to spay on the early side. I might not do a 2 month old spay like some breeders and rescues are doing, but it's not THAT bad to do like 4-6 months.

I wouldn't let it change your mind or make you wait longer for a baby.

I wouldn't worry too much about her going through heat. As Mom2Melli said, you can spay her before her first heat. I was dead set on getting a male at first, but when one breeder said all she had was one female, I opened my mind a bit more, and accepted that this girl could be more like my 'partner in crime' than a male would be.

You just have to be careful if you decide to go through that first heat, though. Just don't do what my boss did when his female dog went through her first heat. His wife was adamant about keeping her inside (for good reason, obviously) but he let her run around without supervision. Then after her heat was over he said to me, 'I think she's pregnant.' :gaah Fortunately she wasn't, and he got her spayed shortly after.

Point is, don't be like that (I'm sure you won't) and you'll be fine.

A couple of years ago a breeder friend of mine asked if I could take care of one of her show female shelties while she had to be away for a month for family issues. She was sure her female wasn't due to come into heat during that time...well, you guessed it, 3 days after her little gal came to me she came into heat. Never having had a female in heat under my care I called my vet and asked what I should be doing for her...they laughed and said just keep her from any intact males (not a problem since my males are all neutered). She did have a lightly bloody discharge for several days...so rugs got rolled up and put away during that time and I did keep her separate from my guys because even neutered they were VERY interested and would have pestered her. But it truly wasn't a big issue at all.

I know spay and neuter age is an often hotly debated issue...but mine are all done between 6-8 months old and I feel very comfortable with that timetable.

Unless there are other reasons you want to wait for a male pup, I wouldn't let this be the deciding factor.

Firstly, congratulations on your future pup! :hugs

I'm in a similar situation as you. My future pup is currently 5 weeks old this weekend however I have no idea which one out of the litter I will be getting. All I know is that it will be a girl since the breeder is definitely keeping the only boy out of the four pups. I admit I was leaning towards wanting a boy before I knew but I did not have my heart set on it so I didn't mind so much when I found out.

The way I look at it is that I will love whichever pup I end up with regardless of sex or colour and I know they will bring me joy and happiness (along with annoyance and sleepless nights, lol). And since I don't know which pup is mine yet I try to find at least one good thing about each of them so I don't get too attached to any particular one.

Having said that I do hope you get the boy if that is what you really want :fl

Thanks everyone! your replied made me feel better.
Puppies are 8 weeks now, no word from breeder. I guess she's still not sure about the pick of the litter. I'm first on the waiting list after her, so hopefully anytime now :)

The waiting is killing me, lol.

I already deep cleaned the carpet, set the crate, bathed the cat (following Mom2Melli's example, lol, cat was not amused), bought the puppy food and treats...

Do you think I should buy a small plastic crate for transportation or is my cat's crate alright for now? It's a large soft crate (he's a Maine Coon so you get an idea of the crate size). It can be strapped with the seat bell and is pretty sturdy.

I know i will have to buy a crate for the car eventually but I dont want to waste money on a small crate the puppy won't be using for long, however, I will buy it if necessary.

What do you think?

I'd say that the cat crate would be fine for initial puppy transportation.
I used a soft puppy carrier- three times now:winkgrin:

We are using our cat crate right now too! Soft crate, attach to seatbelt. I will buy him an appropriately sized crate when he grows up. Shay has one, Melli has one, Cubby will have one. Now, the cat crate.

LOL -- bathing the cat. My three cats are VERY amused at that! But that is cat sense of humor for you. They just WOULD be amused to hear another cat got bathed.

Finally!

Just got off the phone with the breeder!

As I thought, she will be growing out the blue boy i wanted in hopes of a conformation future for him.

I wont be getting him, instead I will be getting this cutie

which is just as good :D

I'll be picking her up on Sunday so I'll use my Saturday wisely and pick up a bunch of cute girly stuff for her (been holding back from buying boy/girl stuff). I'll be also registering her for her puppy classes tomorrow :)

So excited!
