Gavin's radiation treatment

Cindy, if you securely attach the cone to a tightly fitting collar or harness, then Gavin shouldn't be able to pull it off. I always do this with mine because I know the cones wouldn't be on for 5 minutes if I didn't.

Yep...I normally do that.
Gavin was being less than cooperative this morning with the huge cone and I didn't tie it to his collar :( That isn't gonna happen again.

Gavin is kinda going on strike a bit. Just doing little things that make my job harder. I know this has been a long process for him, but :gaah

I might be sedating him even when I'm home if this keeps up!

After everything you two have been through, I don't see any harm in sedating him even when you're home to help you both get through the rest of it. There's no point in getting into a power struggle with him when you're exhausted and he's in pain.

Both of you have been through the wringer on this one...and it is tough. :hugs Even though the radiation was localized it still put his entire system through trauma and careful sedation would give his body the much needed rest to heal better...as well as give you some peace of mind when you obviously can't realistically be watching him 24/7.

I am starting to use 'calming treats' when we are soaking the foot. I have a few Thundertreats, but those have been discontinued (a friends swears by them). Chillout treats and pet naturals calming treats are what I found on amazon. We are testing out the chillout ones tonite. any reviews?

Gavin's foot was unmolested when I got home. But only about 1/3 was still covered with cornstarch. The rest was scabbed over. short soak and reapply.

Foot is healing up, slowly but surely.
Gavin is getting all spunky so he must be feeling better.

He is still hopping on one foot mostly. He will stand on all 4, and will shuffle on all 4 (if he is sniffing around the floor for food, for example).
The wounds seem to be on the top of the toes and a smaller central area on top of the foot, and they look all scabbed up. The sides of his foot are all pink and skin :) He also doesn't flinch if I accidentally touch his foot anymore.

I am starting to decrease his pain meds a tiny bit; there is usually 1 of his 3 doses that is given less than 8 hours after his previous one: I can't give him the Tramadol every 8 hours on the dot, usually there is 9 hours between doses twice (overnight and during work) and then 7 for the last one. So usually the dose he gets when I get back from work is 1/2 tab instead of 1 since he will get another full dose in 6-7 hours. I have also been giving him 1/2 tablet of Aceprozamine before I leave for work (full dose is 3/4-1 tablet). The gabapentin is a capsule so I can't adjust that easily. I will ask on Friday if I can decrease the Tramadol to 2 tabs every 12 hours, that will make things easier. Until he is walking on it I don't want to decrease it too much.

His cheekiness is hard to handle :) The other day he was sitting in a chair and started licking his foo as I was looking at him, and even though I told him 'no!', he kept on licking! Before I got to him he had got a decent amount off, so I had to repeat the wash and dressing :(

That foot is gonna be a no lick zone for quite a while. At least after it is no longer an open wound I can put a sock on it instead of having to use a cone. His sleeping cone is pretty heavy and he can't keep it upright, so not really good for anything but him sleeping. The lightweight cone he will use to scratch his paw. So neither are great options for whole day use.

oh- and he is jumping on and off the furniture like a pro. when he was hurting really badly, he would wait for me to help him.
