Kip hurt his toe!!!

Just talked to the vet. Kip is going to get an extra week of galliprant (sp?) the NSAID, then he is going in for another exam on the 30th to make sure his toe is healing. The vet is going to be away this week...

In the meantime, I still have to keep him crated. I’m concerned that his toe is not going to heal properly and he’ll have long lasting complications. But I’m also concerned that he is going to permanently lose his mind!

I’m going to ask for an X-ray if his toe doesn’t seem right when we go in on the 30th. I wish I’d insisted on an X-ray the first time we went in. Sometimes this vet seems too laid back to me. It wasn’t his regular vet. Just another vet at the same clinic

I know how frustrating it is Elei to know Kip has a problem but not being able to fix it. Just try what you said and give him lots of rest (easier said than done) and if it doesn't look like he's improving then demand an X-ray on his next visit. Hopefully Kip gets better quickly and he can get back to having fun and learning all new tricks

I can totally understand your frustration Elei! When Piper hurt his shoulder when he was 2 he went a full month with no improvement and then after a cortisone shot another 4 weeks without any, and then suddenly no limping! It's so frustrating watching them and wondering but he'll get there, but I do agree call your vet if you have questions. What about splinting it? Years ago my last dog hurt her leg and the vet couldn't find anything wrong even after an X-ray and after 2 weeks of no improvement we splinted it for 2 weeks (would've done for 3 weeks but she got an infection) and she was all better after that. Is that an option?

I got Kismet's X-ray done 2 weeks ago and am still waiting for the ortho vet to review it! I wish I'd just made an appointment with the Ortho vet directly. Everyone is so booked out with Covid this just doesn't seem a priority. But it's so frustrating.

Thanks everyone. I think a splint is a good idea. I’ll ask the vet. I think I’m going to be able to see a different vet at the clinic this time.

You know I said the tranquilizer the vet gave Kip wasn’t helping? I was wrong! He finished that up on Monday, and hasn’t had any the last 2 days. He is absolutely bonkers!! He was still pretty energetic while on the tranquilizer, but this is way way worse. Normally I love his energy level, but while he’s recovering, it’s a big problem.

When he is crated he barks hysterically and won’t chew his Kong or rawhide. I let him out in a small room this morning, and he started chasing his tail, stealing my hair band, stealing cat food, and ripping up a dog bed. All this happened in about 5 minutes.

Oh, he’s also developed a new habit where he barks wildly at the floor....

Poor Kip and poor you! Hope he heals quickly

Sounds like Kip is chomping at the bit to burn off some energy! Is there any tricks you can teach him that don't require much movement? That would help him burn some mental energy off, otherwise he's going to go crazy lol!
I have been teaching tricks. We’re currently working on ‘stay’ with lots of distractions, picking up objects and placing them in a small cup or my hand, and hiding his eyes with a paw. Anyway that’s the goal - it might end up looking like he’s trying to wipe his nose

Sharon, nose work is a good idea. We’ll try it. The thing about Kip is he loves trick training and could do it all day with no sign that his brain is getting tired. He’s happy while we’re training, but immediately is bored and miserable afterwards.
