My Anxious Shelties - Toby and Ginny - Updates on their Progress

He just ignors the dog or dogs. He is doing better no more scratching, his coat is growing. Poor guy is always hungry from the shot he got for allergies. I was worried he would gain more weight but we decided one thing at a time!! He loves people he goes over by them when were walking on the boardwalk. He used to avoid there dogs but now he'll give a little sniff.

Spoke to the Homeopath

I spoke to the homeopath a bit about her fees. Not sure I'll be able to afford it or if I believe its going to work, to be frank.

I was essentially told that homeopathic treatments are meant to cure a problem, not to simply treat a problem.

Natural medicine (different than homeopathy)has done wonders for my own issues, but it certainly hasn't been a miracle cure. Its simply been able to treat issues I have where traditional medicine has failed me.

So I find it hard to understand how homeopathic medicine is going to magically cure the chemical imbalance in Toby's brain forever. Not including the initial cost, his treatment would be $75 a visit, but I don't know if this would be a week, month? I cannot simply go get 'medicine,' she requires Toby to be seen every time I need.

She's told me that she has a 100% success rate with anxiety, which I also find hard to believe.

I wish I had unlimited money so I could explore every avenue. I'm usually pretty open minded and I'd be willing to try this alternative therapy despite my misgivings, its a shame my wallet isn't equally open. But I'm afraid this will cost me a lot of money and get Toby no where.:(

That does seem expensive, not too mention a bit far-fetched. I don't know that anyone could claim a 100% success rate!

I wonder if she would provide you with a list of references? It might help to speak with (or even go see) a family/dog who has been "cured".

My naturopathic dr. knows of her and doesn't have anything negative to say. I was given her name by a friend who's had good success with her too. His dog is 15 and his health had gone down hill quickly when he'd contracted an infection.

So I basically have a couple of good references, but, curing an infection is a lot different than treating a brain disorder though. And I still have a hard time believing the 100% success rate stuff.

Homeopathic

Hey Melissa you are right to question anyone who says 100% cure rate. Absolutes are never always absolute.

You know what? You got me thinking and the way that we got our Tobey out of his scare days, well we ran the little guy a little extra every day and he was too tired to respond with anxiety unless there was a storm. Storms were the worse for him, he never did get over them.

At rescue, he would pant and shake and run continuously to get away from everyone. Once home, he settled into a routine that allowed him freedom to run, and then run to us, eventually.

My blue merle, O'Keeffe, was from a champion breeder and she would squirm and shake if we boxed her in, in any way. Car rides entailed her needing complete and unlimited access to the back seat, and that seat had to be pulled down for her otherwise she would drool, shake and generally be miserable. O'Keeffe never spent a day in rescue. She loved us but needed her place and space and refused to compromise.

I hope these stories give you some hope for Toby. Is Ginny doing extra well? Has she come around?

Thanks for the info.

Actually, I've never found that exercise has really made a difference with Toby's anxiety.

The only thing that I've noticed is that if he's not walked every day, thus exposed to certain triggers, that he has to be desensitize him to those things over again, which can take a few days.

Ginny has been fine, she's had no issues.

Part of my concern with Toby's returned anxiety is that it will eventually make Ginny anxious also. Ginny's anxiety was triggered by Toby before. I don't think that Ginny would have had huge the break down that she did over the bee sting if she hadn't already been so anxious over Toby's barking and carrying on. Ginny has always been a very sensitive little dog, but she was never anxious until we got Toby. I actually caught one of Ginny's anxiety attacks on my web cam. Toby had an anxiety attack over a noise he heard while I was at work, which triggered Ginny's attack and caused her so much stress that she peed. :( Since Toby has been under control I've had no issues with Ginny.

So often have meant to do a web cam of my doggies. Wow that is so good that you got those 'anxiety' attacks on the cam.

Yeah, I knew it was a loooong shot with the exercise for your Toby had no doubt that was tried over and over. Just putting it out there.

Harper Lee peed once when I yelled. I didn't yell at her, I am just sort of loud with my emotions at times and well, she taught me to take it down a notch. But she has a lot of room to talk with her car behavior!! Hah

I come from a loud family.:biggrin2:

I spoke to a second homeopath last night for the heck of it, someone that my Naturopathic Dr. recommended (as oppose to the one he knew of who was so rude to me).

This lady was wonderful! A completely different experience to the one I had earlier yesterday. She was very friendly and happy to answer my questions. She's not as experienced as the other person and has never treated a patient's dog, but she said she's used homeopathic remedies on her own animals and specializes in anxiety and depression.

In short, she said she'd LOVE (her words) to try and help Toby and seemed genuinely excited about the idea. She's going to charge me a fraction of what the other person was for Toby's treatments and said that it would be fine if we communicated primarily through email instead of requiring me to make an appointment.

I'm really looking forward to giving this a try. Fingers crossed that it works for Toby. It would be so amazing if he could live like a normal dog without requiring medication.

You never know what surprising things can happen when you try alternative therapy. My vet is still shaking her head about the change to Phoebe's health but now suggests it to other clients. Fingers are crossed that this woman can help.

Melissa!

I am so happy to hear that you have found someone who is willing to work with you. She sound like someone who is passionate about what she does, rather then looking for making a buck.
