Tully's not doing well

Like I said! They should have given her the patch and sent you home with some! Clearly, the fact that Tully was given a dose by the vet over her weight is mind boggling! Thank the lord you knew better than to give it to her!

Caro, I hope the gabapentin helps ease Tully's pain. Checkers took 100 mg 3x a day and it did help her so I hope it works for Tully. It should also help her sleep. Can you crate Kismet for now, or put Tully in a room you can close or gate off? That would make life easier for all of you.

Sending good thoughts and prayers for healing your way.

Poor Tully! No wonder she tried to hide! I agree, the vet should've just given you a pain patch for her!

What a bunch of mix ups at your vet...good thing you looked at the label, many would've just given the dose prescribed! I've been saying a prayer for Tully many times per day and even yesterday I told my boys that they have to pray for her too...I swear they understood me. :hugs

No matter what I was SO glad to see that she is home Caro. good catch on the gabapentin! And yes, they should have given you the patch in the first place. I can tell you from my career that pain control is so very important for healing - otherwise all your energy goes to fighting the pain. Please dear Lord give this little Sheltie a break and let her heal and have a bit of a peaceful old age. :hugs

The soft stools can be caused by the gabapentin (it is a side effect) or just Tully's IBD.
I do know that gaba works better when paired with an nsaid but of course Tully can't have NSAIDs...you did mention at she'd been on morphine in the clinic, is it possible they'd give you some for her? I read this... Gabapentin is commonly found to be more effective for pain management at the beginning of treatment when administered alongside another pain reliever like hydrocodone or morphine. After a period, the second narcotic can be dropped from the therapy and Gabapentin will remain the sole pain reliever.
Perhaps the combo of the two would work better on her pain?

Had an update, Tully will be staying in for longer - they realised they are having issues with managing Tully's pain, her heart rate is quite high. She's on Gabapentin and Morphine, they just tried Gabapentin alone but her heart rate sky rocketed so they put her back on the morphine. I told them she had a fentanyl patch in the past and managed well with that (when she had her hip replacement), but they have to get special approval from the government now to use them so we'll see. It's just cruel!

Otherwise she is sitting up and they said giving them 'puppy dog' eyes wanting to go home, she hasn't eaten. To me that says she's definitely not ready - Tully's a Sheltie on steroids, she will bark her little lungs out when she wants to come home and will be eating. So I know she is not well.

They will call late today with a progress report and I can visit tonight. But I just remembered I'm meeting a potential handler to show Kismet this evening. So I might have to call back and ask if I can see her after lunch - I want to see myself how she is going.
