Urgent! FOUND COLLIE. Need advice & info ASAP

Hilda called me today with an update on the collie. He is doing well. She says he is starting to even play a little with the other dogs. He is still underweight. He weighs 60 lbs, and for a male collie that is about 15-20 underweight. She is still working on getting the matts out, although she is 80% through.

So since I've talked to her last, she said that they did find his 'owner'. Hilda was contacted by the pound here. The lady said that they DAY I found him, is the day that he got loose from her yard!!!!!!!!!! Hilda and I were both in shock to find that out. The condition that he was and still is in is deplorable! He was mistreated for months to get to that state. His nails are still 1/2" too long and that is after Hilda cut them back. Hilda does not think he was ever bathed. He was not taken to the vet for 9 years she found out. He probably was kept outdoors all the time. By law, Hilda would have to give him back to this person, but luckly for the collie, the 'lady' said that she no longer wanted him due to a family emergency or something. THANK GOD! Hilda's vet said that if this person wanted this dog back, to bring the dog to him first and he'd get involved. The collie is 10 years old, but due to the loss of muscle mass, and everything he is looking and acting a lot older. Also, I thought he was debarked when I first got him, but actually he's not. Apparently Hilda says he is now starting to bark, and his bark is coming back stronger - so he was just too weak to bark! Poor guy. Thankfully Hilda is looking after him and getting him on the road to recovery.

She said she will send me pictures once he is a bit stronger and looking better.

Un-believable! :mad: I just can't understand how people can be like that. Thank goodness you found him and he can finally have a happy life!
 
It's great that he is doing better and very good that the owner gave him up. I think that people don't realize just how cruel they are being.. or they are just idiots..
 
That is a great update,and glad he is doing better.Some people are just clueless are'nt they.
It's good for him that the owner surrendered him.At least he has a good chance of living a happier & more fullfilled life now.

Shame on that owner!

I have to agree. People can be just plain stupid sometimes. It was that poor guys lucky day when he got loose and you found him. Glad he's coming around.
 
I'd say that poor thing didn't get lost ... he escaped! What a horror story. So glad he came your way, Ania, and that he's doing better now. Thanks for letting us know.
 
Why do people get long haired dogs if they don't want to take the time to brush them? I'll honestly never understand that. :rolleyes2:

Did you honestly say his nails were 1/2 inch too long?! :eek2:

Is the woman at the rescue going to keep him or adopt him out? :confused2:

Yes, his nails are 1/2 inch too long, and that is after she cut them already. Hilda says she might have a foster family for him, but he is not in any state to even ask that family yet. She needs to put more pounds on him and make sure he is OK.

You know, funny thing, his 'owner' (and I use that term very loosly) said that she was suprised that I was able to approach him and catch him. She said that he was always very timid and would bolt. WELL, if you mistreat the poor dog, no wonder it bolts when he sees you! He was completely fine with me, got into my car, into my house, and made himself comfortable. Hilda says the same thing. He walked on a leash for me, never pulled or shied away from me - but then, I never abused him.

That's just wrong. :mad: If you don't want to clip nails, then reach into your pocket, whip out a 10 dollar bill, and drive your dog to the groomer's. There's no need for a dog to have nails that are almost an inch too long! :no:


Also, it takes like maybe 20 minutes twice a week to brush your dog? :rolleyes2: Did she end up shaving him, or did she just cut the mats out?
