Why Won't Other Dogs Play With Ellie?

I agree with everyone else. Timid Tully had trouble initiating play, I think she was an awkward teenager. Nowadays she is more comfortable playing with dogs that are playing ball - ones that are not in her face. Which means Goldies, border collies and kelpies. There is a mini schnauzer she adores and will go up and lick him - which he hates and its usually Deska he plays with. Deska used to play heaps but now spends most time with the humans so other dogs dont initiate play with him very often.

One thing I did notice as she got older, Tully spent more time with female dogs and Deska with males.
 
Maybe the other dogs just don't want to mess up her pretty coat?

Y'know, my trainer and owner of the daycare I go to, said she never saw Koji play with any dogs in the daycare. She took him home with her (when we went on vacation) and finally, she got to see Koji play....with her lab. Sure enough, Koji only wants to chase.

However, at home is a different story. I have never heard of, nor seen Koji play with any dog like he does at home with Miko. At home, they'll do the typical jump up, try to bite one another, chase, pin down, etc type of play. No one at the daycare has ever seen him play like that either.

At the dog park, all he wants to do is chase. Must be a Sheltie thing. I doubt Ellie smells funny.
 
Now, just to play devil's advocate.....when my two boys play, they wrestle and grapple each other to the ground....but I expect that's because they are so "intimate" with each and trust each other.

Deja and Darby wrestle constantly. Sometimes it even gets carried too far and I have to time them out.

When other dogs come around, Darby runs at them then throws himself, tail up, under their noses in the worlds fastest and most persistant submissive pose. Deja hangs back but will play if they want.

Oh! If any dog looks sideways to Darby, Deja get MAD. Noone toughes her pet!

That is exactly it....our dogs will wrestle because they know and trust each other. But, with dogs that they do not know as well, they only do chase.
 
Maybe the other dogs at the park could smell her illness? The next day after the park is when she became so ill.
 
I have read online that shelties are the only dogs that seem to be bigotted against other breeds. I also found that to be true when I owned the three shelties. Occassionally my foster daughter would insist that she didn't like shelties and wanted a dog of her own--a different breed. She had a golden retriever for a while, then a rottweiller. The other shelties would not except them into their little group, and would stand around barking at the different breed dogs. I rehomed the golden retriever and rottweiller, since my daughter never liked them much, after she got to know their personalities.

Later, someone asked if they could drop off their sheltie for a few months, just until they could find a place that would allow dogs. The shelties added him to their group immediately and he fit right in. A few years later the woman came and picked him up (no thanks, no pay for food and medical), the other shelties were sad for a little while.

I have to agree with others that any of the herding group would probably be a better match, than just any breed. I have been trying to set up Buddy up with a Corgi down the street, but I keep missing her owner.

To tell you the truth, that's the biggest reason I like having more than 1 sheltie, so that they can have a pal when I can't be there. My husband says maybe later, so I keep praying.

My dogs all wrestle with each other and dogs they know really well. But not strange ones. The girls like to knock Justice down and pin him. I think he likes girls pushing him around.:wink2:
