Dog Wheelchair

So the past 2-3 weeks when it has been hot, Gavin has spent 95% of each day when I am work in my bedroom. Either laying on the bathroom fan by the swamp cooler or in his dog bed by the fan. I am somewhat concerned, but he can get up on the couch (I encourage him to when I am home) and the nightly ramp usage has increased if possible.

Trials of an older pup...

no sooner did I post this than Gavin popped up on the couch for a bit this afternoon. The webcams have me almost obsessed with checking up on Gavin!

So Gavin is on the couch right now :) He won't use the ramp to the chair in the corner anymore; he was using it fine up until about 6 months ago. I know I need to remove it, but I guess it makes me sad to think about it.IMG_6108.PNG

He looks very comfortable! It is hard when we start to notice the things they used to do but are now unable to. Riley used to always sleep on my moms bed, it's been a year now since this all started and he stopped going on it. He does stick close to her bed at night, she swears he pulls her comforter off the bed at night, it's always on the floor in the morning :ROFLMAO:...he makes his bed on the floor lol.

Yeah, the corner chair has been 'his' chair since he was a pup. He always liked being surrounded on all sides....he especially loved sleeping there after a beach romp, wouldn't move for hours! He would always jump up there, the ramp was a late addition when he got hurt 2 years ago. But now, unless I 'help' him up there he hasn't been there for at least a year...Not entirely sure why, since when I encourage him up he never stays very long. It could be it is too soft/unstable for him to easily get up from.

Yes, perhaps he gets uncomfortable...they learn quickly what they like and don't like! I have an elderly client who needs a hip replacement and she told me she sleeps on her couch and not her bed. I asked her why, when you have this big comfy bed do you sleep on the couch and she said because after 5 minutes everything starts to hurt. Could be the same with Gavin

I know he has trouble getting up on his legs on not stable surfaces.
Although he doesn't seem to have any trouble with my bed LOL.

I literally just put him up there and he got down in under a minute!
no trouble getting up either...
Guess he wants to be laying on my feet...

So Gavin has been up on the couch for over an hour each day this week. small victories, but I just want him to do things I know he enjoys. It gives me little warm fuzzies to check my webcam at work and see he has been up there and see pics of him sleeping on the couch with his head on the ottoman :)

Other interesting note, this morning and evening he has been feeling spunky. Enough so that he has been trotting in a new way on his own initiative, by bunny hopping his rear legs to keep up with a faster pace. His gait is much less uneven when he bunny hops and puts less pressure on his front legs (he normally is very uneven and his head bobs a lot to try and balance things out). This is something I have only seen him do at once the local dog park when chasing a ball. Sadly, we haven't been back for a LONG time because other dogs are very hit or miss as it is not well attended during its limited hours.

Warm fuzzies indeed! HAPPY DANCE! Bunny hops are a great solution for him! How smart they are to figure these things out on their own!
GO GAVIN!

So nice to have a way to monitor him at work!

Monitor sounds so much better than spy :)

I am just happy gavin felt spunky enough to bunny hop, since he has been able to do that since the beginning but hasn't really done that much. and to do it twice in one day! Once was his morning walk in the park and the other walking to the post office at night, so not really play inducing events either.
