Chronic tummy problems

Spent 2 hours just laying with him today. He had a little walk and tried to escape across the road (he can be quick when he wants). But that took a lot of energy. He saw Pauline who was his puppy trainer, then colleague at the dog club and now his nurse. So that was really lovely, he was happy to see her and I was surprised he went to her first (before even me). Pauline said that's because dogs will often try to display normal behaviours when they are very ill to normalise things and get comfort.

Sadly, Tully went up to give him a kiss and he pushed past her (to get to Pauline). Tully was extremely miffed and very upset. She didn't come near him after that and stayed under chair, then no wags for anyone we visited. It's a shame because she was being so protective and obviously doesn't understand he wasn't ignoring her, once shy/timid dogs never entirely lose their low confidence and are easily unsettled.

Laying with him was lovely. He would wake up see me and laugh/pant and smile, sniff my mouth and go back to sleep. He was so upset when they took him away. I'm going back tonight, might see if we can lay in the car.

He still has a high fever which is why he cannot come home. Waiting for culture results for the AB which can take 5 days. I don't know whether to keep waiting - they may be able to stabilise him if they get the right drug. Or maybe it's too late. The say he is really fighting this. I know he would be ecstactic coming home and spending his last days here, and I know he is really happy when he is with me. But in between is leaving him at the vet and that must be stressful. God this is so tough - I don't think we can always know when it's the right time.

It's 11pm and I'm sitting with Deska. His breathing heavily and that doesn't seem right. I asked the vet and he thought it was ok, but I know just earlier today his breathing was quiet and gentle.

I don't know whether to wait until morn and speak to his specialist or call it now. Tully has appointment here in morn so we need to be here.

I fear he'll die thru the night without me. I want to do this at night so he can be in back of car, outside. But I'm so tiredright now I wouldn't make it back home.

Oh Caro, words cannot express how sorry I am that you and Deska are going through this. No matter how many dogs we have in our life and how many times we go through this, there is no easy way to know when it's time to let them go. Trust your instincts. No one knows Deska like you do. Sending you many hugs and prayers.

1.30am and still here. Breathing a little better. I Need to get home as feeling seedy but whenever I move he tries to get up. Didn't realise they'd let me stay all night as I'd have been better prepared.

You are so right Ann... Trust your instincts.

Back home. I am quite exhausted. I think he was doing better when I left, certainly seemed more settled. He was very happy to sleep with me by his side. Emergency vet said it will take time for the peritonitis and sepsis to settle, but I need to work out if it's good for him to stay there when he doesn't ahve a lot of time. These are decisions better made in the light of day with a bit of sleep though.

Caro, Ann is right...you know your Deska better than anyone and your instinct and your love for him will help you can make whatever is the right decision. My thoughts are with you both. Sending many hugs. Trini
